1) My video window turns out all pink or black or doesn't display
properly...
The root of the problem is most likely residing in either your Graphic
Card or the CPU / Motherboard. The Graphic Card:
DirectX 8.0 (or higher) has to be installed on your machine
and your Graphic Card has to support it for the videos to play
properly. You can download the latest version of DirectX from
Windows Update or preferable from your Graphic Card manufacturer.
If your Graphic Card isn't fully compliant with DirectX 8.0 (or higher)
you might experience the following problems:
- The video bitmap turns out all pink and it's not possible to play
the H.264 files/streams.
- If two or more players are launched simultaneously the video window
get all black.
The following Graphic Cards has been tested with the
DSP Research

The Motherboard / CPU
General Information:
The V130x does not support AMD CPUs. If you're lucky, you might
get it to work for a single board configuration using an AMD CPU. But
keep in mind that, if you decide to use such a configuration, it will be
at your own risk and officially we do not support it.
The symptoms of an incompatible CPU / Motherboard are:
- The video window turns out all black.
- The whole encoder/streaming application hangs.
An Intel Pentium 4 CPU with an Intel Motherboard is a strongly
recommended configuration (this configuration has been tested at several
different occasions on several different machines and has always proven
to work).
Feedback from one of our customers regarding the performance
required for the encoder PC:
Do use:
 | Genuine Intel Pentium 4, 478 Socket CPU, Preferable 1.6 GHz or
greater. |
 | Either an ASUS P4B, P4T, P4B266 - OR - Gigabyte P4 Titan
Motherboard. |
 | A true 4x AGP Card such as an AOpen TNT2-M64 or Nivida MX200. |
 | Use at least 256 MB RAM for best Performance. |
 | Try to keep your system in the Pentium 4 range. |
Do not use:
 | AMD K62, Duron or Celeron CPU's. |
 | Amptron, Matsonic, EliteGroup. VIA, ECS or PC Chips Motherboards.
Basically, if it's a "Cheap" lower-end Motherboard, you get what you
pay for and it will more than likely give you trouble. Trust me. ;) |
 | A 4x/2x compatible AGP card SiS Chipset based motherboards. |
 | Do not run anything else on this surveillance computer - keep DVR
card and computer running smooth and don't bog down the resources. |
2) The DSP Research Multimedia Player plays back my 60
sec H.264 video clip in 75 seconds (or in an untimely manner)...
Answer: You are running out of CPU processing power on your PC, and
when this happens the decoder is no longer able to play your file in a
timely manner. You can check your CPU Usage under the Performance tab in
the Windows Task Manager.
3) What is the power consumption
of the DS-4004HI (V1304) board ?
Answer: The power consumption for one V1304 board is as follows:
 | Typical: 18W (5.0V/3.6A) |
 | Max: 25W (5.0V/5.0A) |
4) Which versions of LINUX does the
V130x-BSP
support ?
Answer: The V130x-BSP support the following versions of LINUX:
 | Red Hat 7.2 or Kernel 2.4.7-10 |
 | Red Hat 9.0 or Kernel 2.4.20-8 |
 | Contact us for others |
5) Can you recompile the DS-400x-BSP to
support other versions of LINUX ?
Answer: Yes, but only for customers who have already committed to 100+
boards.
6) What is the PCs CPU load for the DSP Research
Multimedia Player when decoding the H.264 encoded files?
Answer: The Multimedia Player or the Windows Media Player plug-in uses
20-25% of the CPU on P3-800MHz per channel with CIF resolution.
